Maharshi Karve stree Shikshan Samstha, a 114 years old samstha was established in 1896 by a great visionary and social worker Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, to provide shelter to destitute women. MKSSS ensures an activity that shall see the light of many more centuries to come.The institution has been committed to "Empowerment of women through education". The institution has a long history of dedicated work towards making women educated and self reliant, with a mission 'to create the world-class educational environment, to enable students to fully develop their abilities and fosters a strong sense of responsibility, morality and ethics, based on a strong set of values.' The Institution is registered under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976, vide letter Number: II / 21022 / 68 / (594) / 85 FCRA.III dated 23 March 1985 with a Registration No. 083930104. Date of issue is 23 March 1985.

In addition to FCRA Registration, the organization is also registered as a 'Society' on 21 February 1949 and as a 'Public Trust', on 4 Nov. 1952 under Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 with a Registration Number 'F 51'.
Organizational Structure:
a. Year of Establishment:
The Institution was established by Dr. D. K. Karve in the year 1896. The Institution is now 112 years old.
b. Nature of the Institution:
The Institution was established solely for the purpose of women's education and their social uplift. So it is an Educational Institution for girls and women, running different educational and other units for them.
c. Number of Units and Their Locations:
The Institution runs 58 units. These units are located in Pune, Satara, Wai, Ratnagiri, Kamshet and Nagpur.
The Samstha is honoured with the following awards:
- Dalit Mitra Puraskar for remarkable social work by Maharashtra Government ( 1978 )
- Smt. Vimlabai Tidake Award for excellent work in the field of Mahila Bal Kalyan by Smt. Vimlabai Tidake Samajseva Trust , Nagpur ( 1988 )
- Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Puraskar for remarkable social work , by Mahila and Balkalyan Dept. of Maharashtra Government ( 1999-2000 )
- Rotary International Award for Humanity to Society by Rotary International , New Delhi , in the year of Women Empowerment ( 2001 )
MKSSS Pune has diversified branches all over Maharashtra. More than 20,000 girl students are pursuing their education at different branches of the samstha. These branches strive to develop women into truly performing citizen in today's era of globalization. The following institutes are some situated in the Karve Nagar campus, Pune.
What Maharshi Dhonde Keshav Karve envisioned and initiated more than a hundred years ago, today has developed and matured into a successful endeavor, both social and educational. In an era when woman's education was unheard of, he had the courage and conviction to establish a full fledged woman's university.
The Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha has flourished as a centre of higher learning for women in the fields of engineering , architecture, management, fashion design, nursing and vocational training.
